The plain answer

## First, what is sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a peptide made in a laboratory: a short string of protein building blocks.

It signals the pituitary gland, the small gland beneath the brain, to release growth hormone, which the body makes to carry chemical messages.

It does not supply growth hormone itself.

Small studies in older adults found higher growth hormone levels but no change in body fat in the studies that measured it.

A higher hormone test result alone does not tell you whether you will feel better. Ask what it would mean for the problem you want help with.

Bring the problem you want help with to a visit, even if sermorelin is what led you there.

## Is it a real medicine?

The FDA, the US medicine agency, once approved sermorelin (Geref) for a hormone test and children’s growth failure caused by a growth hormone shortage.

The maker asked to end those approvals; the FDA did so in June 2009.

As of September 28, 2026, no FDA-approved sermorelin medicine is sold in the US.

A claim about the old product does not answer a question about the product offered now.

## Can a pharmacy make it?

In the name “sermorelin acetate”, acetate identifies the particular version of the ingredient used in the old medicine Geref.

As of September 28, 2026, a state-licensed pharmacy may make sermorelin acetate for a patient named on a valid prescription, if it meets the pharmacy rules.

The basis is a federal rule for ingredients used in approved medicines; no FDA document found specifically confirms that rule for sermorelin in an ordinary pharmacy.

The pharmacy must also meet ingredient quality rules and state pharmacy rules.

Ask the pharmacist how it meets those rules for your prescription, including how it checks the ingredient’s identity and quality.

With compounding, the medicine is made to fill an order; a manufacturer does not supply it as a finished drug.

As of September 26, 2026, medicines prepared to order are not FDA-approved; before they go on sale, the FDA does not assess their quality, safety or benefit.

Ask the pharmacist what checks it performs before sending the medicine to you.

Ask which pharmacy makes the product, then check its licence.

## Give a quick claim a closer look

### Myth: sermorelin is growth hormone.

It prompts the body to release growth hormone; it is a different substance.

### Myth: the old approval covers today’s version.

As of September 28, 2026, pharmacy-made sermorelin is not FDA-approved, even where making it meets the law.

### Myth: the withdrawal proves Geref was dangerous.

In March 2013, the FDA found that Geref had not left the market because of safety or effectiveness problems.

That finding does not endorse a product offered today.
